The court measures 20 meters (65′ 7″) by 40 meters (131′ 3″). The court is larger than a basketball court, but the length may be shortened when space is limited. The goal area line, or 6-meter line (19′ 8″), is the most important line. No one except the goalie is allowed to stand in the goal area. The goal opening is 2 meters by 3 meters. Players may jump into the area if the ball is released before landing in the area. Team handball is played with a 32-panel leather ball. For women, the ball is 54 to 56 centimeters and 325 to 400 grams. For men, it is 58 to 60 centimeters and 425 to 475 grams.Players cannot receive the ball and bounce it, then hold the ball, and bounce it again. This is termed ‘double dribble’ and is against the rules.Players (other than the goalkeeper) must not kick the ball. If the ball touches the foot, then possession is awarded to the opposition.
Each team has 12 players. However, only 7 players take the court at any one time and one of these must be the goal keeper. The reminding players are substitutions during the game. They enter and leave from the substitution area of the court. Players alternate between an attacking position and a defending position, depending on who has possession of the ball. The goal keeper of each team wears a different colour from the rest of the team.Where the similarity with Basketball differs (apart from having goals and a keeper) is that it is a contact sport, where defenders can block an opposing attacker to prevent them shooting. This tactic means that the defending team tend to guard their own D, whilst the attacking team pass the ball around to try to find a way to attack and run in to get a clear shot on goal.
The mix of experienced players and beginners makes the role of the coach a bit blurred. At the moment Mari, Pierre and Cedric from Cameroon share the coaching. On the court, the more experienced players make sure that the beginners learn from their mistakes by pointing them out.The game itself is fast with lots of running up and down the court. It can also be very rough, with physical contact allowed. Some say it’s all about intimidation, scaring and shouting will put the other players off to your advantage.Protective eyewear must be properly worn at all times during play. Lensed eye protection designed for court sports with polycarbonate lenses of at least 3mm center thickness is recommended.Failure to wear appropriate protective eyewear properly will result in a technical (See Rule 4.9), and the player will be charged a time-out to secure eyewear. The second violation in the same match will result in a forfeit.
